Learning to Learn

One thing that we unlearn is that teachers are the expert. The only thing that we need to experts is; inspiring other, asking questions, and learning. Another we should unlearn is teaching is confined to four wall or pages ofa book. Also, that teaching is not telling. According to one teacher, it's "very difficult to unlearn when my district is telling me to do sit and talk with my students..." According to another teacher, they need to unlearn that they are the one running the lessons in the classroom. One teacher says that we need to unlearn that: we need grades and grading, we should fail kids who don't finish, we should slow down fast learners to narrow gaps, teachers control the knowledge.

We need to re-learn that the unexpected will happen. Teachers have to learn how to be facitilators of knowledge. One good quote from a teacher is "teaching is learning, learning is relationships, relationships are without bonds." A teacher says that she needs to learn how to provide more knowledge in practice in my professional development. She think that people learn best from each other. Patricia says that she needs to learn how to guide twoard her students towards self-directed learning.

One challenge that can occur is that most students come into the classroom and want to be "entertained." The students think can sit back and be a passive learner, and that it's the teacher's responsibility to "make" them learn. Some students just go to school, HS or college, to simply mess around. Learning has no affect on the student, the ycould care less.

Interactive Whiteboard

Interactive Whiteboards are designed to focus the attention of the children, but to also to boost the interactivness of the teacher's lesson. Another name for these types of boards is the Promethean Interactive whiteboard System. Based on what I have seen during class, you can do a lot of the board: change pen color, erase, write, find games, and create different interactive activities for the students. Some different things you can do on the board are: allow the students to come up and just write on the board, have games where they have to either write on the board or drag different things around, or maybe they just want to tap different things and see what it does.

In my HS, we had this IWBs in almost every single classroom. Problem was our teachers would never let us use the boards. One of our teachers did, sort of. I was a sophomore in SH and my global teacher had all these different multiple choice questions up on the screen. One by one, he had us all go up to the board and do a couple of the questions. though this wasn't much, it still got the class up and moving. The other teachers either didn't have th boards in their class, or were so afraid that we would break them that they wouldn't let anybody, except them, near the board. Those teachers that only had whiteboards and chalk boards in their room , I felt, should have gotten a IWB. Granted I couldn't read what was ever on the board, but at least later I could go up and read it up close. I can't do that for the regular whiteboards or chalkboards because it inolves being able to read others hand writing. Having a visual impairment makes it hard to read even small print on a screen nevermind someone's actual hand writing. I've seen my vision teacher work with young students, who's teachers use IWBs. She makes it so that the student, who also has a visual imapirment can have a computer that hooks up to that screen so that they could see what was on the board because it would project on the screen right in front of them.

This takes me into the differentiation part. When it comes to differentiation, it's both possible and not. The only time it wouuld be realistic is if you were teacher a class with not so many students in it. The bigger the classroom the more difficulty the teacher will have in meeting all the students needs. The board is designed, with people with diverse learning styles, to be: flexible to use, effectiveness and simplicity For instance, fi the student learns audotorially, the teacher can make the lesson in audio format and the student can listen to it. If you have a tactile student, they can go up to the board and "play around with it." That or the the teacher presents games, or acivities, the student can use the board to teach themsleves the lesson.

Differentiation

As I understand it differentiation is the understanding that all students in one given classroom learn differently. Some are audio learners, and others are either; tactile or visual. Not only that but different students take different amounts of time to complete an assignment. One kid might take an hour on an assignment where the next student will take 2. It all depends on the student's learning ability. Different kids could also have disabilities that require them to take longer. For example, if someone had a learning disability an assignment will definitely take them longer then someone with normal ability. this is because it takes them longer to comprehend things then others

Due to my visual impairment, I have definitely experienced differentiation. On top of that I also have a learning disability. Even without the learning disability aspect, it takes me longer to do assignments because sometimes I have to squint to see something, or I have to convert something to audio so that I can have my computer read it to me, or it just takes me extra time on a test because of the vision and the fact that I get tired easily. Never mind the learning disability, that just makes it worse. Because mine is with reading comprehension, I have to have things read to me over and over before I understand what a particular article or story is trying to say.

From different videos that I've watched, I saw some different computer programs that allow the children to work at their own pace, but still do the same activity as the rest of the class. This program is on the MacBook. For example, I watched this video where first, or second, graders were using a math program. It's a program that has math problems. This program, however, allows the student to do the math problems at their own pace. It's a good thing for the teacher too because there's a little frog on the program that will announce when you've gotten a problem wrong and how to change and, what the correct answer is.

Twitter and Me

I created a twitter account almost a year ago. I created it because a lot of my friends were on it and said that it was really fun. Initially I got it to "test the waters." Now I'm using it a lot. Mostly to follow and tweet on this one radio personality's page... Kimberly from Kimberly and Beck... but I do have tweets of my own sometimes

Last week, our teacher had us make a professional twitter account. At first I have to admit I thought it was pretty stupid, but now I'm guessing it could actually be useful. For both interacting within the classroom with your fellow classmates, but also with the teacher. When I go into the work field, I could use it to; communicate with parents, ask students questions and give them all a chance to answer, and communicate with other teachers and admin.

Today, in class, the teacher had a take a quiz using twitter and Google docs. We were in groups, and using twitter, answer questions in a Google docs format. The teach posted all the questions we had to answer on twitter, and we had to tweet our responses.

The final frontier

This presentation is trying to get teachers to incorporate technology into the classroom. The different slides showed different reasons why teachers should implicate technology into thier teaching styles
I worked with two others. As a whole that we worked well together. Not only did we all have good personalities, but good work ethics. We all did at least one slide. We put two videos and photos into our slide. This was to enhance the knowledge of others and make them see that this is a good way to go about doing things and a way of teaching teachers should switch over to
The article, Teachers' Beliefs, talked about how teachers pedagogical beliefs and what they think of technology. There were a few experts that gave reasons to why technology should be integrated into everyday teaching. One of these beliefs would be "easy access"

All about me

Me and my friend Yoko. Taken at the Carroll Center for the Blind

My name is Tiffany Krause. I am from Rochester, New York near Lake Ontario. I am just south of the border for Canada. I am 21 years old and live with my; mom, dad, brrother, and 2 dogs. I was born with a visual impaired that has, thankfully, not gotten worse since birth. My right eye has gotten sslightly worse over the years but not drastically. I could go on and on about me, but this blog would turn into a mini essay :).

Currently I am majoring in Secondary Education of mathematics. What I really see myself doing, after school, is working with young kids. Next year I am either going to change to the duel major of Early Childhood and Special Education, or I am going to major in pre-k and minor in Special Ed. When first looking at colleges, Nazareth college in NY didn't haven't the major that I really wanted to do. The closest to it was education. I had to choose a subject that I was best at, which was math, so that's how it turned into what I'm doing right now

I feel that technology definitely has its advantages, both for teaching and for recreational purposes. Technology has made everything so much easier to do. A long time ago when you used to have to look thing up in books or get info by word of mouth, now you can just go on google, or ask, and just type in what you want and there you go. When I am bored, I tend to surf facebook and twitter. That' makes time go by so fast. technology, especially cell phones, takes away time from real interactions, but for the most part it's good. When talking about teaching, so many teachers these days have smart boards and the ability to use apple devices. This is a lot easier than always having to look things up and then tell the sutdents. If you can connect your desktop to a board at the front of the room, all you have to do is go to a site and everyone can see what you are. It also saves time.
